SHERWOOD, Ark. (KTHV) – A fallen Jacksonville firefighter was remembered Saturday. Captain Donnie Jones died last year while responding to a motorcycle accident.
The Sons of Inferno Motorcycle Club and local vendors gathered on Saturday to raise money in his honor.
“He was a wonderful man,” said his wife Betty Jones. “He was just one of a kind.”
Former firefighter Michael Doyt came up with the idea for the fundraiser just three weeks ago.
“Every day that I hear of a fallen firefighter, it hits home,” he said.
Tammie Newborn gathered the vendors for the event on short notice.
“I put the word out on Facebook and said I was looking for vendors,” she said. “My heart goes out to anything like that.”
Businesses along Warden Road ordered plated lunches from the fundraiser in support of the cause. The money was supposed to be split between the Arkansas Fallen Firefighters Memorial Fund and the Jones’ family, but Donnie’s wife Betty had other plans.
“My family has decided to give that money to the memorial fund,” Jones said.
Doyt said he hopes to see the event grow from year to year.
“We will do this every year, and each year we will choose a different family that we will raise money for that has suffered a line of duty death in their family,” he said.
Doyt plans to host the event each year on the second weekend in December.
